Welcome to the 31 Days of Halloween - DAY 30

Today I'm upcycling one of my own pieces of art! Last year I tried Acrylic pour canvas painting. This is one of my pieces, a 6x6' stretched canvas for Halloween. Nice, but boring...

I reached into my bag of Halloween tricks and pulled out a plastic skeleton (I bought so many of these throughout the year that I haven't had to purchase any in forever). Using his lower legs and a larger one from another bag, I formed the latter "B"., brushing it with white paint before adhering it with hot glue.

A couple black silk leaves and white felt flowers formed the letter "O" twice, and now my artwork has a title, "BOO". I added a few die-cut leaves and a small wooden gravestone to finish off my project. I hope I didn't overload the canvas, but I am NOT a fan of "white space". It's difficult for me to stop when it comes to embellishments. I hope you've enjoyed the 31 Days of Halloween here at 'Patacake's Pages. I have one more day to entertain you with my imagination and creativity this spooky season. See you tomorrow.

Welcome to the 31 Days of Halloween DAY 6

Today's project is a craft that comes from several different leftovers. I had the swag made of sticks that I had to re-tie. The pumpkins came from a nasty wreath that I had tossed, keeping the wooden pieces for later (or rather now). I had to repaint them to give them life (call me Mrs. Frankenstein).
The leaves are the last of my collection of felt Fall leaves, which I adhered onto the branches after wiring the pumpkins to to sticks . I also made a loop of wire from which to hang my decoration. It was an assembly job, for sure, but worth scrounging around for all the pieces.

I love to decorate my front porch for Halloween. I put things in the windows, on the door, along the railings, even in the corners of the stairs. Since I created several wreaths, I'm putting the Pumpkin trio in one of my windows this year.

Welcome to 31 Days of Halloween - DAY 2

Last year I found a bundle of dream catchers for a steal at a thrift store. This year I put one of them to good use. I first sprayed it with black spray paint, including the outer rim. I pulled out three large black flowers and covered the middle of each with a plastic skull. Before adhering the flowers to the catcher, I slipped a Fall leaf behind each black bloom. After gluing on the sparkly orange bow, I decided it needed something extra. I rummaged around my button jar and pulled out several stars and ghosts and glued each onto the "web" part of the dream catcher. I added a tiny skull to the bow and now I have a Nightmare Catcher for Halloween this year!

Do you dream in color or black & white? The first time I realized I dreamt in color was when I woke up remembering my dream of bright billowing purple smoke coming out of the fireplace (which I don't have, by the way). Ever since then, I've tried to pay more attention, but most mornings I forget my dreams very quickly.

31 Days of All Hallows Eve - Day 27 - Pumpkin Succulent

Halloween is in the air! 'tis almost the witching hour, so let your crafty magi flow over blogland! My mission  today was to use up more Halloween craft supplies, especially those styrofoam pumpkins from the Dollar Store. Mine was white, so I didn't have to paint it.

I rescued a fake succulent I had bought from the thrift store for 50 cents and pulled it out of its cheap plastic pot. I dug a hole in the top of my pumpkin base and hot glued it in place. Next I layered fabric leaves around the plant, adding flowers, orange and black deco balls and jewels to fill in the gaps so you can't see where the plant ends and the pumpkin begins.

I finished off my Halloween decor with a leftover piece of lace, adding adhesive jewels to it for some shiny. It is almost 4 inches wide and 5 inches high with the succulent standing tall. I love how it turned out, and I spent more time sorting thru my faux leaves and flowers than I did on putting the project together!

Are you ready for the BIG DAY? Got your costume and/or makeup at hand? Got enough candy to pass out? Is your home decorated? Just four more days!! Meanwhile, find out your Halloween name from below...

31 Days of All Hallows Eve - Day 26 - Golden Skull Wall Art

My make today features the golden skull. Why did I italicize those words? I don't know, it sounds like an Indiana Jones movie title. Anyhow, the skull came off a Dollar Store skeleton. Since he was dead already, I cut his head off his body and took off the back half of his skull. Then I painted it gold.

The "canvas" is one of the few boxes I got from the Dollar Store via the thrift store. I peeled the Easter Bunny decoration off the box and used Mod Podge to adhere part of a Halloween napkin onto it to create the background.

As I was painting the sides of the box, the gold paint over-ran onto the front, so I made sure the gold made a sort of border. After my skull was dry, I used hot glue to adhere it onto my canvas. I pulled out a piece of laced burlap and some twine. I added some Fall leaves and a sunflower and my project is finished.

31 Days of All Hallow's Eve - Day 1 - Autumn canvas

Hello, my peeps! Starting today, I will feature crafts, decor, haunted tales, cartoons, etc. all with a Halloween vibe. Be prepared to be inspired and a little spooked by my offerings. Today, I created wall decor for my home, altering a wooden box/sign from the Dollar store that was an Easter decoration, now bringing in the Fall season.

I used some of my leftover stash of papers and adhered it to the front, after peeling, scraping and sanding the original clean. Searching through my Halloween craft supplies, I found the sticker letters spelling FALL and added them after placing a line of pumpkins from my ribbon/trim stash.

I finished off my project with tiny leaf die-cuts and a button (the tree). This was a very simple project that took me more time looking for the supplies than to put it together. Don't you love that kind of project? LOL

I will be showcasing a new make every day in October, some cute like this one, others bringing out the creepy, spooky vibes. At the end of the month, I will randomly pick someone who has left a comment on any of my blog posts and send them a digital copy of my new coloring book. This book features a lot of my Zen doodles as well as others I have not published. Being digital, you can print and reprint on any kind of paper repeatedly!

Do you know why leaves change colors in the Fall? While chlorophyl keeps them green in Spring in Summer, the chemical decreases its production as cooler temps appear in the shorter days. According to Science Notes, leaves also contain flavonoids and carotene (orange and yellow) as well as lycopene and anthocyanin (red and purple). As chlorophyl decreases, these chemicals show their true colors. When the temps lower, leaves lose their bright colors, turn brown and brittle and then die.

A Beautiful Day

Today was a beautiful day...to paint, to walk the dog, to enjoy the breeze, smell the blooming flowers, pick strawberries from my garden, to just be alive.

I have stacks of canvas, pieces of wood, shelves of paint, thrift store items to be upcycles, and clean brushes in hand. Today I'm going to my happy place. I'm going to paint!

And paint I did. I created an acrylic paint pour canvas, and after it was dry, I stenciled this awesome quote onto it. A couple layers of gloss varnish and just took a photo of my canvas. And I like it! LOL

If you haven't tried pour painting, it's messy, it's tricky, but it's worth the effort. Just make sure EVERYTHING is covered. I might have a couple drops of paint on my ceramic tile. And watch what you wear. I now have a pile of (paint-stained) shirts to take to the trailer for when I'm working on my 1987 model RV. Some things are worth the price...

This canvas is going to my trailer. I have an RV near several state parks and the quote is perfect!

A Walk in the Woods

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
~from Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken
Hello, crafters! Time for another DT project for Ike's World Challenge Blog. The challenge is at its midpoint, and I wanted to lend some inspiration by creating this hybrid card. Between paper-crafting elements and digital magic, My image, Frankinella (a freebie on Ike's World Challenge Blog), decorates the woods with a colorful yet uneasy appearance. I think this time I would want to "take the road much more traveled..." LOL
My background is a recent watercolor I created. It is framed with the Gold textured paper from Christmas Grunge by Decosse's Dynamite Doodles. My leaves and stars are from a collection called "Hello Autumn" from   , and the "campfire" is from   .
Whether you take the road less traveled or heavily traveled, stay out of the woods on Halloween. You never know who (or what) you might meet. Check out the challenge blog for your freebie. Link up your Autumn Colors project and you have a chance to win a gift certificate to Ike's Art.

Fall Into a New Challenge at Craft Your Passion Blog

Everyone loves an Anything Goes challenge, and when it's sponsored by the East Wind, it's a win-win week! I got to play with a gorgeous image called "Maple" for my DT card for Craft Your Passion challenge blog. It was awesome to pull out all my autumn-colored Copics and breathe life into her before fussy-cutting her out and framing her with falling leaves.
Fall is my favorite season of the year, for the sheer beauty of it. The trees shake off their richly emerald-hued summer dresses, leaving crunchy carpets of velvety browns, golden yellows and crimson. I find more wonder during the months of September and October than at any other time of the year. And my kids go crazy because they know Halloween is coming. They have the house decorated already and are planning their costumes--already!! Well, I have planned a trip to our local Goodwill store so that they can find the perfect (inexpensive) costumes for the long-awaited holiday But they want it all NOW! So I made this card and placed it on the kitchen table. Maybe it will keep them a little more patient?? Well, at least I was inspired by all that luscious color out there!
What inspires you? Whatever it is, I love seeing what other crafters share in each week's challenges at Craft Your Passion. I hope to see your card or project there this week! Until then, happy crafting!

Outlawz Challenges You to Show Off Your Fall Colors

They say that April showers bring May flowers, but Autumn showers bring crunchy carpets that color our world with crimson, gold and orange paths on which we walk quickly before it all blows away into winter. To show off those gorgeous colors, this week’s Outlawz Greetings Challenge is to create with FALL COLORS.

There are two sponsors for this week's challenge:
Whoopsy Daisy

and Sweet n Sassy.

Today my card features a digital image from Whoopsy Daisy Sheet 463. I think she showcases Autumn in all its glorious color so very well. I can almost feel the crisp wind she faces as she walks home in the early afternoon.
I used a leftover piece of patterned paper for my card face, which became my inspiration for coloring my image with Copics. Some Tim Holtz ink distressed the edges before I frame it and place it just under a ribbon border where my sentiment resides.
Of course, with a sentiment like that, there was only one embellishment to finish off my cards. I used metallic leaf brads and a couple chipboard die-cuts. The pearls add a smidgen of bling.
Quick, before the leaves all blow away, show your Fall colors and play in this week's Outlawz Greetings Challenge.
